Here are a few things to consider that may help you save time and money with your next home improvement project:

Decide what you want before you begin.
Whether you are planning to work with an interior designer or have your own design in mind, start by compiling photos and samples of preferred design elements (e.g., style, color, flooring, fixtures, etc.). The more detailed information you can provide upfront, the less time it will take to finalize your design and execute your construction project. Good sources for design ideas include home and lifestyle magazines, showrooms, open houses and even well designed commercial properties.

Choose a paint finish that's right for your wall.
The finish of your paint can enhance the look of your wall, or reveal imperfections. A flat paint can help hide uneven areas and small holes or cracks. A glossier paint can enhance the look of a smooth surface but is more likely to reveal slight imperfections.

Compare apples to apples.
When prospecting bids, be sure to include a detailed list of items and services you would like included in your cost estimate. This should also include any materials or items that you will reuse or puchase on your own that should be deducted from the overall bid. Consistency between bids will ensure that you have the information you need to choose the best construction team for the job and avoid unexpected or hidden costs.
